It is important students complete work on time so they can continue to work with their group.
This week the Character book will be assigned.  Directions will be posted on google classroom.  This project takes some time, and so students should begin working on it immediately and use their open class time to work. We will see if there is time for a group final project for the book.

Spelling/grammar: We will do one more lesson in spelling.  We will pick the words this week and the test will be next week Tuesday.  We will have an assignment this week Wednesday.  We continue to go over grammar skills.  We will be working on classroom as well as through worksheets on these skills.  Students need to make sure they complete them and turn them in on time!!
Writing: We had our author's celebration last week.  Thanks to all of those that made or brought treats to share.  It was very fun.  I am hanging on to the stories in order to grade them.  Students will get a grade based on the writing skills for this genre and a grade based on grammar skills.  A rubric will be attached to the grade.

Social studies: We have completed work on the US Constitution.  The students did metaphor posters based on the 7 principles in the Constitution.  They did a great job.  We have moved on to the Bill of Rights.  We have taken notes on this chapter.  We will complete the study guide Monday - due on Tuesday, and take the test on Thursday.
We will then move on to prepare for our 5th grade field trips.  We will look at the beginnings of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln.  We will finish up with Westward expansion.

*********************************************************************************

We have moved on to book clubs.  Each student is in a book club with 1-5 other students.  They are reading a book based on this last genre we studied.  There will be assignments on google classroom each class time that we meet.  Students will also get a great deal of class time to read, however most will need to read outside of school as well to complete their assignments. Students should not fall behind on this last unit - they will not have time to make it up.

Continue to encourage your child to work hard these last weeks.  We will enjoy the time we have left!
Blessings on your week,
Mrs. Brown

Testing week

This week we will be completing the Stanford Achievement Tests.
We will be working on them during the morning times Mon-Thurs.

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and good nutrition this week.  They may bring snacks, water and mints to school if they wish to help carry them through the tests.

We will only have 2 assignments this week.
1.  Social Studies - each student is working on an individual research project about a topic from the Revolutionary War.  We researched last week.  Their final slides are due Thursday.  They will have time to work this week, but may need to complete them at home.

2.  We have been editing our stories for over a week now.  That too, we will finish this week in order to publish the stories.  You may help your child edit, but do not rewrite the story for them.  This is a reflection of many weeks of work, and what they have learned in writing this year.
You are welcome to make suggestions and help with grammar, punctuation etc...

Next week we will get back to our regular schedule and work.  We will be finishing up our poem unit with a group narrative poem project and moving on to our final Book club book.  This will be a book written in prose form.  There will be a calendar of assignments posted on classroom once we get started.  These are not difficult books to read and we will get through them quickly.

We are wrapping up the Tournament of books.  Each student needs to have read one book from the list and filled out a ratings sheet.  Extra books will be entered as extra credit points.

Blessings on your week,
Mrs. Brown

Week of April 3-6

I pray your family had a blessed Easter.
This is our last short week of the year!  However, we will be very busy from here to the end.  We have a lot of material left to cover and skills to prepare students to move on to the next grade level.
Encourage your child to be diligent in completing their work to the best of their abilities, especially when the weather begins to turn nice and outdoor spring activities pick up.

Even though it is April, we are continuing our March Madness Tournament of books.  Most students have already completed at least one of the required books and are now reading others for bonus points.
We will move the bracket for the first time this week.  Students may still read any of the books in the tournament even if they do not progress in the winners bracket.
**Thank you to those parents that have helped your child get one of these books online, at the library or by purchase.  It has been great to see their enthusiasm with reading!

We will end the year with a final Book club book.  We will begin that the week after testing.

We will be editing stories and then will move back into some grammar skills fourth quarter.  We will do a combination of grammar skills and writing for the remainder of the quarter, once our Fantasy stories are complete.

Writing:  This week we are taking our drafts which we have been revising and typing them into Google Classroom.  Some stories are very long, and students may need to type some at home in order to have it completed by Friday.  We will then begin the editing process.  Finally we will print, and illustrate these stories.  We will have an author share day hopefully in about 3 weeks.

*******************************************************************************

6th Grade Literature: We are on the last portion of our Holocaust unit.  Students have been broken into groups and are doing some research on a specific topic that we addressed in the reading of Number the Stars.  They will be creating a visual project of their findings.  These will hang in the hallway hopefully by the end of this week or early next week.
**We have a possibility of attending a very special field trip with this unit.  Ms. Stearns and I will let you know the details as soon as we find out.  We will need parents helpers to go along.  It is tentatively set for Thursday, April 12th in the afternoon.

We will then quickly move into our Legends and Myths unit.  We will do a couple weeks of classwork together.  We will end the year with one last Book club reading a fantasy, mystery or science fiction book.

Spring Break and beyond

Just a couple of notes as we begin Spring Break, incase your child is working on something over break.

March Madness Tournament of Books:  Almost every student has checked out a book from the tournament.  Books checked out from me, will need to be read and returned when we return on March 26.  Most books have a wait list.  If students get the books from their own library or online, they can take longer to complete.

**Again - the books are listed on this blog under both 5th and 6th grade literature.

We will begin rating the books and moving the bracket when we return.

5th Grade Writing project:  Most 5th grade students have chosen to continue to work on their story over spring break.  They have spent many hours on these stories and worked so hard on them.  Rough drafts must be completed by Monday, March 26th.  If your child is writing over break, hopefully they will allow you to read the story and help.
**We will do grammar editing after we return.  We are just working on getting the story ideas down.

When we return:
Literature:  5th grade will be working on a Fairy tale unit.  We will be reading fairy tale picture books in class and comparing them.  Absent students will need to make up what they miss during class.
Spelling:  New words on Tuesday, March 27.

Social studies:  We have been working with Spies and coded messages.  We will finish the chapter on Monday.  A study guide will come home Tuesday, March 27 - due the 28th.  We will review and take the test Thursday, March 29th.

*****************************************************************************
6th Grade Literature:  We will spend approximately 2 more weeks on our Holocaust unit.  We are half way through the excellent documentary Paper Clips.  We will finish that, and take a test over it.  Students will have the opportunity to work with a group and complete a short research project on one topic from this unit.

We will then move on to a unit on Myths and Fantasy.

Have a very blessed week whatever you do.
Mrs. Brown

Week of March 12 - 16

This week marks the beginning of the fourth quarter.  It is amazing how fast this year has gone.
Teachers will be finalizing grades from third quarter this week. All late work was due last week Friday, so hopefully students checked on that.

There will not be corrections for the tests we took last week.  Students knew that up front, and they will receive those tests back this week.

This week in the afternoons (last block) students will have the opportunity to experience Mini courses.  This is a wonderful opportunity and we are thankful to all of the parents and volunteers coming to teach classes.

We are moving on to study the Declaration of Independence.  We may possibly be ready for the test at the end of this week, but I will let you know.

*******************************************************************************
New Reading Program:  March Madness Book Tournament for both 5th and 6th Grade:
On Monday we will introduce our 4th quarter March Madness tournament.  Based on a nationwide program we have chosen books/authors to compete against each other in a bracket style tournament.  Students will read as many of the qualifying books as they can over the course of the next month.  For each book they read, they will fill out a reading slip and rank the book on a 1-10 scale.  We will be keeping track of rankings for the tournament.  Students will again be given reading time in class and we will keep track of minutes read.
A list of the books will be posted on this blog under literature.

Our next chapter will revolve around a debate of Loyalists vs. Patriots.  I will let you know as soon as I have a date for each class' debate.  It is a lot of fun to come and watch.

*********************************************************************************

6th Grade Literature:  Our class novel Number the Stars is going well.  We will read the majority at school, but students will receive short reading assignments at home.  We have taken our first quiz, and a journal is due this week.  Keep checking on Educate, that all this work is being turned in on time and complete.  This week Thursday/ Friday we are involving the student's in an activity revolving around the book Hana's suitcase.  It will connect well to other aspects of this unit, and we are excited to introduce this awesome story to the students.

Keep working on Book reports.  Directions posted both here on the blog and Google classroom!

Week of February 5-9

Last week was a busy week, especially in 5th grade.
Both 5th and 6th grade ended literature units and took the final test.  Those will be posted this week.
5th grade had the awesome experience of attending JA Biztown through Junior Achievement.  This was a wonderful real world program.  We are thankful to all those volunteers that helped with this.
We will be posting and sending out some pictures of our day.

We begin new units this week in literature and writing - back into class novels.
*All students should have set a goal last week for reading the remainder of their book report book.  Reports are due end of this month.

5th Grade assignments
Monday - Past tense verbs worksheet - due Tuesday
Tuesday - Spelling word list - due Wednesday
Wednesday - Spelling assignment - due Friday
Thursday, due Friday - Literature - Quiz one for Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe

5th Grade Language Arts - Literature:  We will begin our class novel on Monday.  We will be reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.  This is an awesome example of fantasy writing, that has a wonderful Christian element to it.  We will be reading a lot of the book in class, but there will be some outside reading as well.  Feel free to read the at home assignments with your child.
We will focus on Characters during this read, elements of fantasy and again, theme.
We will be completing daily drawings and writings in our Reader's notebook.  If your child is absent they will need to make sure and find what we did in our notebooks each day.

Spelling/Grammar:  We will pick new spelling words this week.  Each students list is due and will be checked on Wednesday.  We will have an assignment due Friday.  We will continue working some with verbs this week.

Writing:  We are beginning a new writing unit.  We will be writing Fantasy short stories based on the drawings from The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.  We will begin by doing some character writing this week and then setting.  We will write focusing on the different elements before we begin a final story.  There may be some homework this next two weeks in the Writer's notebook.

Social Studies:  Last week Monday, the King of England came to our room and implemented some candy taxes without the representation of the students.  We are using that lesson to discuss how the colonists felt as we move through the historical events of chapter 10.  We will spend some more time on this chapter this week, before taking the test.
Chapter 9 tests were returned last week.  Any students wanting to make corrections will need to see me.
*******************************************************************************

6th Grade Literature: We are continuing our unit on Historical fiction by beginning a class novel.  We will be reading Number The Stars by Lois Lowry.  This is a relatively easy read for 6th grade, and we will move through the book quickly.  Some chapters will be read at school, some assigned for home.
**We will post a calendar, however it is just a basic guideline of what we will do each day.  Assignments and dates will change, and your student will need to record the actual assignments in their planner.
Any work listed on the calendar is what will be done in class that day.  Students may not work ahead on assignments.

Along with this unit we will be doing several other activities.  We will be investigating other literature surrounding this subject, including some poetry.  We will be completing a group project and a final reflection project by each student.  We will be watching a wonderful documentary and taking notes.
Our goal is to keep the focus of this unit (the Holocaust) on the positive aspects and people that came from this tragic time in history.  As we do some research, we will be guiding the students to filter carefully what they view.

*******************************************************************************
Book Report: Both 5th and 6th grade should be working diligently on completing their book report book and beginning the project.  Each class has looked individually at what they have left to read and set a daily reading goal.  They are receiving class time to read, but they will need to read outside of class.  Please check with your child on the goal they have set and where they are with their book.
Reports can be started whenever the book is completed.  Remember directions are posted on this blog and Google classroom.
If students need templates or other help, they can ask anytime.
Due dates:  6th grade - February 22 - Teasdale (A day classes), February 23 - Hieber (B day classes)
                   5th grade - February 26th.

Blessings on the upcoming week,
Mrs. Brown

Week of January 16-19

What an awesome week we just finished.  We completed a great deal of work and are moving through these units.
As always, I am so excited about the work the students are doing, and their insight to topics we have discussed.

We have a busy four day week ahead. 5th grade has an exciting social studies opportunity on Thursday, January 18th.

5th Grade Assignments

Tuesday:  Spelling assignment - due Thursday
Wednesday:  Grammar assignment - due Thursday
Daily questions -  students will have a series of questions to answer that match the picture book they read that day.  If they do not finish the questions in class, they become homework, due the next day.
Thursday - Spelling test
Friday - Grammar assignment - due Monday 1/22
Friday - Social studies workbook pages 46-48 and 52-54 due.  All of these pages except p.54 were done during class time.  Students will need to double check that they finished them.

5th Grade Language Arts:Literature:  We have begun one of my favorite units.  We are in an Author study, studying Chris Van Allsburg.  Each day, students read one of his picture books, as a group and fill out questions about it.  These are awesome fantasy books, that all contain a greater theme or message.
If students do not complete the questions, or they are absent, they must make up the reading on their own. I am in this week for recess, so it can be done then.
Spelling/Grammar:  We will have a spelling assignment on Tuesday on this week's words.  Please review the words with your child.  The test is on Thursday.
We are working on grammar skills, especially those that affect our writing.  We have been working on plural, and possessive nouns, and will finish this week.  Expect at least 2 graded assignments on this.  We did several practice pages last week.
Writing:  After we finish reading Chris Van Allsburg we will begin some fantasy writing.  We will use a Chris Van Allsburg book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick to base our stories on. We will begin that writing in a week or so.

Social Studies:  We are beginning a very interesting series of chapters in American history.  We have spent the last two weeks, reading about and discussing the origin of slavery in America.  We will continue to touch on this subject as we move on through history.  There will not be a test on this chapter.  We have done workbook pages, discussions and a worksheet.
We will spend Monday and Tuesday preparing for our day on Thursday.  We will be reading about Colonial American life.  We will read from our book so that we have some background knowledge before Thursday's activities.
Thursday, January 18: We will begin stations about 12:50.  We will end around 3:00pm.
All 5th graders will be in the dining hall and adjoining rooms for this activity.  They will move between 6 stations, learning different aspects of Colonial life.  At each station, there will be something to make, play or sample.
Come join us for any or all of this event.  I could still use 2-4 parent helpers during this time.

*****************************************************************************

6th Grade Literature:  We have been working with autobiographies and biographies. Last week students were divided into expert groups.  They became an expert on one of the stories and then told that story to a new group.  Now the groups, having heard all the stories, are answering questions about them.  We will finish the questions this week.
We will then move on to two last stories in our Lit book.  We will read an autobiography about the Chinese Cultural Revolution and a fantastic historical fiction story about Pompeii.  Look for assignments on Google classroom for both of these stories.

We have gone over the choices for third quarter book report.  They are posted on Google classroom and on this blog under both 5th and 6th grade literature.  Due dates are posted as well.
Students are given time to read during class.  However, work on the book report will need to be done at home.  This project should take more that one night to complete, and students may begin as soon as they have finished reading the book.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Blessings on your weekend,
Mrs. Brown

First full week of the New Year

Welcome back.  I pray your family was well and enjoyed your time off over the holidays.  It was wonderful to have all three of my children at home, and spend quality family time together.

Third quarter has begun, and units have changed.  5th graders will be expected to be in class on time and prepared.  Both 5th and 6th grade will have weekly free reading assignments and both will have a book report due.  This quarter is full of wonderful learning experiences in all the subjects.
Important dates are listed below.

5th Grade Third quarter dates to remember:
Possible Colonial Activity day  - Thursday, Jan. 18
January 22-26th Lutheran School's Week
Friday, January 26th - Author visit at Elementary
February 2 - JA Biztown field trip
Book Report due - February 26th

This week's assignments:
Weslandia - Create your own land - due Wednesday.  Directions on Google classroom
Monday - Grammar quiz
Tuesday - Choose new spelling words - see blog and Google classroom
Tuesday - Zathura questions assigned in Lit - due Wednesday
Thursday - grammar homework - due Friday

5th Grade Language Arts:  Literature:  We have begun studying a new genre.  We will be focusing on Fantasy, science fiction and fairy tales for the next couple of months.  Right now we are reading a couple selections from the Treasure's reading book and completing activities on them.  We worked on the story Weslandia last week, and answered story questions.  Now each student is designing their own land or civilization. Directions are posted on Google classroom, but besides the basic requirements, their creation is only limited by their imagination.
This week we will read Zathura which will begin our author study of Chris Van Allsburg.  Students will be reading 8 of his picture books in class and answering questions about them. We will also study the author himself. This work will be done at school, with the copies of the books.  Absent students will have to stay at recess and read what they have missed.

**Students should have by now a book they are reading independently and using for their book report.  All books must be approved by me.  They will be getting class time to read, but will still need to read at home.  They have a reading log they are keeping track with, and each student must read a minimum of 1 and 1/2 hours per week.  That averages out to about 15 minutes per day including once over the weekend.
**We will be going over the book report choices this week.  They will be posted on the blog and Google classroom.

Spelling/grammar/writing:  We will continue with spelling in the same manner as first semester.  We will pick new words every two weeks.  Over the course of those two weeks, students will complete at least one spelling assignment.  They should study the words on their own.  Tests will be given every other Thursday.  We will choose words this Tuesday.
Grammar:  Since we just finished a large writing assignment, we will take a break for a few weeks and work on grammar skills.  We are reviewing nouns at this point, and will go onto verbs as well.  There will be assignments on worksheets and google classroom.
Writing:  We have several writing units to still get through.  We are going to write fantasy/fairy tale stories as we read them this unit.  That will begin in a few weeks.
I am going over the Explorer writing with each student individually to discuss their writing.  They will eventually get that report and grade page back to bring home.

5th Grade social studies:
We are moving into an awesome time in US history to study.  Right now we are on chapter 8 about the beginning of slavery.  This topic will carry through until the end of the year.  We will then move on and talk about Colonial times.  This is a great unit with lots of hands on activities.  We usually do them over the course of a week in the classroom.  This year if it works out, we may try an activity lasting the afternoon in a couple of weeks.  I will keep you posted.
This week will will finish up work in our workbook for chapter 8 and it will be graded.  There will be a test or quiz and I will let you know when that will be.

********************************************************************************
6th Grade Literature:  Now that we are back, we are switching gears.  We have taken notes and discussed some different genres.  First semester we mostly read realistic fiction.  We are now reading biographies, autobiographies and eventually historical fiction.  We are using short stories out of our yellow reading anthology book.  Last week we read a biography about an African American that was part of the first expedition to reach the North Pole.  There is a homework assignment with it on Google classroom.  It is important these assignments are done on time and the answers are complete!
This week we will be dividing into expert groups and reading 1 of 4 short stories from our book.  There will be a note taking assignment with it.  Then groups will be reshuffled and each student will need to teach their story to the rest of the group.  Again, an assignment on all 4 stories will be on Google classroom.
Students should be now also have an independent reading book that they are reading for their book report.  Students will be given a portion of each class time to read that book.  They are keeping track of their reading on a reading log.  They will also need to read at home.  The will be required to read a total of 2 hours each week, that averages to about 20 minutes each day including once on the weekend. This will be part of their grade.  The book report for 6th grade is due February 22 or 23rd.  Directions will come out this week and be posted.
We will move on to historical fiction and after reading a wonderful story from our book we will be reading Number the Stars, which is an excellent historical fiction book.

We have lots going on, and I am very excited about the units ahead this quarter.  They are some of my favorite to teach!  Make sure to stay on top of your work and turn everything in on time!!
Blessings on your week,
Mrs. Brown
