Week of January 29-Feb. 2

Last week was a great week.  We enjoyed celebrating Lutheran School's week with some awesome activities and days of just fun.

This week we are wrapping up several units especially in Literature, and moving on to new things in social studies and writing.

5th Grade assignments:

Monday - Grammar review on verbs - due Tuesday
Tuesday - Spelling assignment - due Wednesday
Study guide for Literature test - posted on Monday
Thursday - Literature test over Fantasy unit
Thursday - Spelling test

5th Grade Language Arts:  Literature:  We have finished our author study on Chris Van Allsburg.  We enjoyed reading many of his picture books and discussing them.  This week groups will give a presentation about one of the books to give us a better understanding of it.
**There will be a test on this unit on Thursday.  The study guide will be posted on Google classroom on Monday.  We will take notes on it from the presentations.
We will be moving on to our novel shortly.

Spelling/Grammar:  We will continue working with verbs this week.  We will complete a second spelling assignment this week.  Students can use Spelling City to practice the words.  Words for each class are posted under www.spellingcity.com/ccls5th.  The word test is Thursday.

Writing:  We are moving back into a new writing unit.  We will be writing fantasy stories.  They will contain some of the same elements as our first unit.  Work will be done mostly in the Writer's notebook to begin with.

Social Studies:  We are beginning chapter 10 this week.  We will have a special activity on Monday to introduce this chapter.  Chapter 9 tests will be returned on Tuesday, and directions will be given to make corrections.

6th Grade Literature:  We are finishing the unit on Biographies/autobiographies and historical fiction.  We have read our last short story from the Lit book and will discuss it Mon/Tuesday.  There will be a test over this unit on Thursday/Friday.  A study guide will be posted on Google classroom.
Students will need to review their notes, information and vocabulary from each of the short stories.

We will then be moving on to our class novel Number the Stars.   There will be a calendar of chapters assigned and assignments due posted on Google classroom when we begin the book.

**We will be checking reading logs this week in both 5th and 6th grade and each student's progress on their book report book.  It is a good goal to set to be finishing reading the book report book this week or next, in order to have time to work on the projects.
Remember projects are posted on this blog and Google classroom.  Students are choosing one project to complete.

Blessings on the week ahead.
Mrs. Brown
