5th Grade Social Studies

Explorer research final project:  Due Monday, Dec. 18 - may be turned in ahead of time.

The explorer writing portion may be completed in two forms.
  1. Chapter form:  Students may take each category/chapter from the writing and put it on a separate page.  Pictures, maps etc.. can accompany the writings.  Chapters may be printed back to back.
This will form a booklet style project. A table of contents and cover should be included.

    2.  The writing may also be completed in paragraph form.  Each category will need to be a separate paragraph and indented. Images and maps etc… can be part of the writing.  This will create a term paper style project.  An outline and cover should be included.

The creative side:  Coat of Arms
Each student will design an original Coat of Arms to represent their explorer.  The Coat of Arms must include the explorer’s name, and a shield with 4 symbols.  Each of the symbols must represent the explorer in some way.

The internet/computer can be used to print words or images.  However, students may not print an entire Coat of Arms to use.  Students may also draw, color or paint  the Coat of Arms.  It must be at least 12x18 (no regular 9x11” paper).

We will continue to work on the writing portion in class through part of next week.  Students will need help with final editing and formating.  I will print the completed work at school.  The Coat of Arms portion will need to be completed at home.  We will look at examples at school, but not take time to work on it.

Test correction policy:  Students may correct questions missed on 5th grade social studies tests.

Once I hand back a test, students have 2 weeks to make corrections and return back to me.  After 2 weeks have passed, corrections will not be accepted, because we will be preparing for the next chapter test.

To make corrections and receive credit:
1.  Students must take the test and correct the answer missed. This procedure is for all multiple choice, true/false, fill in or essay questions.

2.  Students must list the exact location from their text, workbook or notes where they found the answer.
If students do not document how and where they found the correct answer, no credit will be given.

3.  Corrections made on a map or other diagram or drawing, must be done at school, without the answers in front of them.  They may bring the original paper home and look up the correct answers and study them.

4.  The corrected paper must be signed by a parent.

It is up to the student if they want to make corrections on a test.  I will not require it. They may make corrections no matter how many they had incorrect.
