Spring Break and beyond

Just a couple of notes as we begin Spring Break, incase your child is working on something over break.

March Madness Tournament of Books:  Almost every student has checked out a book from the tournament.  Books checked out from me, will need to be read and returned when we return on March 26.  Most books have a wait list.  If students get the books from their own library or online, they can take longer to complete.

**Again - the books are listed on this blog under both 5th and 6th grade literature.

We will begin rating the books and moving the bracket when we return.

5th Grade Writing project:  Most 5th grade students have chosen to continue to work on their story over spring break.  They have spent many hours on these stories and worked so hard on them.  Rough drafts must be completed by Monday, March 26th.  If your child is writing over break, hopefully they will allow you to read the story and help.
**We will do grammar editing after we return.  We are just working on getting the story ideas down.

When we return:
Literature:  5th grade will be working on a Fairy tale unit.  We will be reading fairy tale picture books in class and comparing them.  Absent students will need to make up what they miss during class.
Spelling:  New words on Tuesday, March 27.

Social studies:  We have been working with Spies and coded messages.  We will finish the chapter on Monday.  A study guide will come home Tuesday, March 27 - due the 28th.  We will review and take the test Thursday, March 29th.

*****************************************************************************
6th Grade Literature:  We will spend approximately 2 more weeks on our Holocaust unit.  We are half way through the excellent documentary Paper Clips.  We will finish that, and take a test over it.  Students will have the opportunity to work with a group and complete a short research project on one topic from this unit.

We will then move on to a unit on Myths and Fantasy.

Have a very blessed week whatever you do.

Week of March 12 - 16

This week marks the beginning of the fourth quarter.  It is amazing how fast this year has gone.
Teachers will be finalizing grades from third quarter this week. All late work was due last week Friday, so hopefully students checked on that.

There will not be corrections for the tests we took last week.  Students knew that up front, and they will receive those tests back this week.

This week in the afternoons (last block) students will have the opportunity to experience Mini courses.  This is a wonderful opportunity and we are thankful to all of the parents and volunteers coming to teach classes.

5th Grade assignments March 12-16
Spelling review Tuesday - due Thursday
Thursday - Spelling Test
Rough draft of Fantasy story - due Thursday
Social studies test - possibly Friday - I will send an email

5th Grade Language Arts - Literature - We enjoyed reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe very much.  It had so many wonderful literary elements and Christian elements.  We will finish the movie sometime this week.
This week we will do some follow up work on this unit with Fairy tales.
Spelling/Grammar: There is a spelling test this week Thursday.  Review the words. We will come back to grammar at the end of this writing unit.
Writing: We are working hard on our rough draft fantasy stories.  The first draft will be due this week Thursday.  We will continue to work on specific elements of this writing before starting the revision and editing process.

Social Studies: Last week's Debate was awesome.  Both classes did a wonderful job portraying the historical figures and arguing the topics of that day.  It is one of my favorite events we do.  Thank you to the parents and grandparents who were able to spend that time with us. We are moving on to study the Declaration of Independence.  We may possibly be ready for the test at the end of this week, but I will let you know.

******************************************************************************
6th Grade Literature:  We will continue this week doing some follow up work on ou Holocaust unit. We will be watching a wonderful documentary called Paper clips.  We will be taking notes on this and an eventual test.  If students are absent they will need to watch it outside of class in order to complete the work.  We will also be working on a group project involving limited research on this topic.

*******************************************************************************
New Reading Program:  March Madness Book Tournament for both 5th and 6th Grade:
On Monday we will introduce our 4th quarter March Madness tournament.  Based on a nationwide program we have chosen books/authors to compete against each other in a bracket style tournament.  Students will read as many of the qualifying books as they can over the course of the next month.  For each book they read, they will fill out a reading slip and rank the book on a 1-10 scale.  We will be keeping track of rankings for the tournament.  Students will again be given reading time in class and we will keep track of minutes read.
A list of the books will be posted on this blog under literature.

Blessings on your week,
Mrs. Brown

Last Week of Third Quarter - March 5-9

This is the last week of the third quarter!!  All students need to check Educate for any outstanding work.  A late grade is far better than a grade of 0.

I will be in for recess this week for anyone that needs to come and complete work.

We have also finished our literature novels and will be testing this week on the books and vocabulary.

5th Grade Weekly assignments

Monday - 300 word literature journal due.  This was assigned last Thursday
Tuesday - due Wednesday - New spelling words.  Students list of 20
Wednesday - Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe Test - over the book and 10 vocabulary words.

5th grade Language Arts: Literature: We have finished The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  It was awesome and the classes did a great job reading and discussing it.  We completed the book, final questions, character sketches and Biblical comparisons last week.  We completed vocabulary words on Friday and students took their folders home to study.  Monday we will go over a study guide.  The test over the book and vocabulary words will be Wednesday, March 7.
We will find some time at the end of next week to watch the movie version of the story.  It is very well done, but is rated PG. If you do not want your child watching it, please let me know.

Spelling/Grammar:  New spelling words will come out on Tuesday.  The next test will be the first of the 4th quarter on March 15.  We will return to grammar at the end of this writing unit.

Writing:  We have just completed our second graphic organizer for our fantasy story.  I will be grading them over the weekend.  We will begin our rough drafts this week.  We will be writing each day in class.  I will let you know when the next deadline approaches.

Social Studies:  We have spent this week preparing for our debate. We will do some rehearsing on Monday.  Your child may be telling you they need a costume to wear.  The actors will need to dress up, but you can use items you have at home to create the character.  Others will have a choice to dress up or not.
I believe I posted the dates incorrectly last week on the blog.  I apologize.
5 Brown will debate Thursday, March 8 from 8:30-9:30 in the Atrium room.
5 Akerson will debate Friday, March 9 from 8:30-9:30 in the Atrium room.
Sorry for the confusion, it is based on the A/B day schedule. We would love to have parents come and watch this event.  Just meet us down in the Atrium room off the church lobby at 8:30 am.

****************************************************************************

6th Grade Literature:  We have finished the novel portion of our unit.  We completed reading Number the Stars.  The test over the book content will be Tuesday for A day classes and Wednesday for B day classes.  We are going over a study guide with each group and recommending students use it to study.  There will be 3 essay questions on the test.  We will take the vocabulary part of the test on Thursday - A day and Friday  - B day.  Students will have next week to complete and look over their words.  The vocabulary folder will receive a third quarter grade as well.
We will be watching the movie version similar to the book next week after the tests.  We will begin 4th quarter finishing up this unit with a documentary called Paper Clips and a group project.  Details to follow.

Blessings on your weekend and the week ahead,
Mrs. Brown
