Week of April 30-May 4

We had a busy week last week, and we again this week.
It was wonderful to meet so many Grandparents and special friends on Friday.  I love watching the kids interact with them.  Many 5th graders shared their stories we had just finished.  There were some very impressed special friends!!

We have a lot to do in the remaining weeks.  As always encourage your child to stay focused and complete all work on time and to their best ability.
Students missing work in these last weeks will need to stay in at recess or other events to get it completed.

5th Grade assignments for the week
Spelling was due on Friday.  If you check Educate a number of students did not turn it in and have a missing assignment.  Grammar was due Thursday, but there are a few of those missing as well.
Spelling practice test given on Tuesday, corrected and due back on Wednesday.

Chapters in Book club books due on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Entry/exit questions due each day on Google classroom.

5th Grade Language Arts: Literature:  We have finished looking at poetry and have moved into our last book club novel.  Each group is reading a book written in prose.  Chapters have been assigned and each student has an assignment calendar on Google classroom.  We will read a great deal of this in class, but there may be days pages need to be read at home. We will do questions, journals, a quiz, a character book and final test.
Again, it is important students don't fall behind on the chapters assigned or assignments given.

Spelling/Grammar:  We will be working through some grammar skills.  We will be completing assignments both on classroom and some worksheets. Any missing work will be noted on Educate.
We have a spelling test this week on the words we choose last week. It is a tough list, so make sure to look over it before Thursday.
Writing:  We will have our author's celebration this week.  We will continue to some writing through the end of the year.  Students will be able to choose to write poetry, another fiction story or a memoir.
Their fantasy stories will be graded and then sent home, but that will take some time.

We will be ready to complete the study guide hopefully by the end of this week with the test next week Tuesday.  I will let you know for sure.

Blessings on the week ahead,

We have lots of time left in the quarter and lots of work left to do.  Make sure your child doesn't check out early and continues to keep up with the assignments.

We will have journal assignments, and comprehension questions and they will need to be able to finish the book in the remaining weeks.  We will be going over choices and books that I have copies of at school next week.

Keep an eye on Educate to make sure all Lit assignments are turned in.  We still have numerous assignments left to complete.

Testing week

This week we will be completing the Stanford Achievement Tests.
We will be working on them during the morning times Mon-Thurs.

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and good nutrition this week.  They may bring snacks, water and mints to school if they wish to help carry them through the tests.

We will only have 2 assignments this week.
1.  Social Studies - each student is working on an individual research project about a topic from the Revolutionary War.  We researched last week.  Their final slides are due Thursday.  They will have time to work this week, but may need to complete them at home.

2.  We have been editing our stories for over a week now.  That too, we will finish this week in order to publish the stories.  You may help your child edit, but do not rewrite the story for them.  This is a reflection of many weeks of work, and what they have learned in writing this year.
You are welcome to make suggestions and help with grammar, punctuation etc...

Next week we will get back to our regular schedule and work.  We will be finishing up our poem unit with a group narrative poem project and moving on to our final Book club book.  This will be a book written in prose form.  There will be a calendar of assignments posted on classroom once we get started.  These are not difficult books to read and we will get through them quickly.

We are wrapping up the Tournament of books.  Each student needs to have read one book from the list and filled out a ratings sheet.  Extra books will be entered as extra credit points.

Blessings on your week,
Mrs. Brown

Week of April 3-6

I pray your family had a blessed Easter.
This is our last short week of the year!  However, we will be very busy from here to the end.  We have a lot of material left to cover and skills to prepare students to move on to the next grade level.
Encourage your child to be diligent in completing their work to the best of their abilities, especially when the weather begins to turn nice and outdoor spring activities pick up.

Even though it is April, we are continuing our March Madness Tournament of books.  Most students have already completed at least one of the required books and are now reading others for bonus points.
We will move the bracket for the first time this week.  Students may still read any of the books in the tournament even if they do not progress in the winners bracket.
**Thank you to those parents that have helped your child get one of these books online, at the library or by purchase.  It has been great to see their enthusiasm with reading!

5th Grade Assignments this week:
Due Tuesday - Spelling assignment creating fill in the blank sentences. It is on Google classroom and was assigned last week Thursday.
Correcting sentences Assigned Wednesday - due Thursday
Thursday - Spelling test (class words are posted on this blog under English/Spelling).
Friday - Final typed draft of Fantasy Story on Google classroom English

We will be reviewing for Achievement tests this week.

5th Grade Language Arts: Literature:  We are finishing up our Fairy tale comparison unit this week. Students that did not complete the required books, will be finishing them during recess time.
We plan to move on and spend some time on Poetry in both reading and writing.
We will end the year with a final Book club book.  We will begin that the week after testing.

Spelling/Grammar: This week is test week over the words chosen.  Please look over the words with your child.  Many students are not looking over the words and scoring in the "C" range or below on the word tests.
We will be editing stories and then will move back into some grammar skills fourth quarter.  We will do a combination of grammar skills and writing for the remainder of the quarter, once our Fantasy stories are complete.

Writing:  This week we are taking our drafts which we have been revising and typing them into Google Classroom.  Some stories are very long, and students may need to type some at home in order to have it completed by Friday.  We will then begin the editing process.  Finally we will print, and illustrate these stories.  We will have an author share day hopefully in about 3 weeks.

*******************************************************************************

6th Grade Literature: We are on the last portion of our Holocaust unit.  Students have been broken into groups and are doing some research on a specific topic that we addressed in the reading of Number the Stars.  They will be creating a visual project of their findings.  These will hang in the hallway hopefully by the end of this week or early next week.
**We have a possibility of attending a very special field trip with this unit.  Ms. Stearns and I will let you know the details as soon as we find out.  We will need parents helpers to go along.  It is tentatively set for Thursday, April 12th in the afternoon.

We will then quickly move into our Legends and Myths unit.  We will do a couple weeks of classwork together.  We will end the year with one last Book club reading a fantasy, mystery or science fiction book.

Blessings on the week ahead,
Mrs. Brown
