5th Grade Language Arts: Literature:  We are finishing our author study on Chris Van Allsburg.  We will be reading our 6th book on Monday.  The questions for each book are due on Wednesday.  Students will then join a group and create a detailed presentation about one of the books.  There will be a test on this unit.  I will send home information by email if we get that far this week.
We will begin our next class novel shortly.  We will be reading C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Spelling and grammar:  We are going to change spelling just a bit this quarter.  We will still be taking 2 weeks per lesson.  This week we will choose new words.  The students will still be adding their own to the list.  Any class words missed the week before will be redone.  We will do an assignment on Thursday of this week as well, due on Friday.  Then next week their will be a short review assignment.  Assignments will be on Google classroom unless otherwise noted.
In grammar we are going to spend some time on verbs.
Writing:  We will begin our next writing unit next week.  We will be writing fantasy stories based on the Chris VAn Allsburg book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.  We will begin with character development and similes and metaphors before writing a draft.

Social studies:  We had a great day on Thursday moving between 6 Colonial American Stations.  Thank you to Samuel and Brody's moms that came to help along with Mr. Hartmann, Mr. Akerson, Mrs. Jokerst, Mr. Doug Meyer, Miss Rachel Larson.  Not only did we learn a lot about how life was in the 1700's, but we made candles, silhouettes, quill writing, played games and sampled some corn cakes and cider.
This week we will take the chapter test and move on.  Upcoming chapter is on Patriots and Loyalists and we will hold a debate!

6th Grade Literature:  We are still on our unit of Autobiographies and Biographies.  We are finishing up our story about the Chinese Cultural Revolution called "The Red Guards."  Students will be assigned a timeline this week, due Wednesday/Thursday.  We will then read one more story from the yellow lit book entitled, "Dog of Pompeii" and do a brief historical study of Pompeii.  This will prepare us to begin our next class novel - Number the Stars.
**This week check Educate for three grades from the Biography, autobiography unit, and the grades for The Red Guards.

***All 5th and 6th graders should be reading their independent reading book both at school and outside the classroom.  It would be great if students had finished their book report book, before we begin the next class novel.  Remember the book report projects require more than 1 day's work!!  We will be checking reading logs this week.

Blessings on the week ahead,
Mrs. Brown
