Week of April 30-May 4

We had a busy week last week, and we again this week.
It was wonderful to meet so many Grandparents and special friends on Friday.  I love watching the kids interact with them.  Many 5th graders shared their stories we had just finished.  There were some very impressed special friends!!

We have a lot to do in the remaining weeks.  As always encourage your child to stay focused and complete all work on time and to their best ability.
Students missing work in these last weeks will need to stay in at recess or other events to get it completed.

5th Grade assignments for the week
Spelling was due on Friday.  If you check Educate a number of students did not turn it in and have a missing assignment.  Grammar was due Thursday, but there are a few of those missing as well.
Spelling practice test given on Tuesday, corrected and due back on Wednesday.
Grammar worksheet Monday - due Tuesday
Chapters in Book club books due on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Entry/exit questions due each day on Google classroom.
Social studies combined study guide for chapters 14-15 - either assigned Thursday or Friday.  I will send a separate email.
Spelling test - Thursday:  class words are posted on this blog and on Spelling city

Special event this Thursday from 2:00-3:00!  We will have an Author's celebration and share our amazing fantasy stories.  We will be in the dining hall.  Students can bring a snack to share with the 5th grade if they wish.  We will put enjoy some food and share our stories.  Parents are more than welcome to join us.

5th Grade Language Arts: Literature:  We have finished looking at poetry and have moved into our last book club novel.  Each group is reading a book written in prose.  Chapters have been assigned and each student has an assignment calendar on Google classroom.  We will read a great deal of this in class, but there may be days pages need to be read at home. We will do questions, journals, a quiz, a character book and final test.
Again, it is important students don't fall behind on the chapters assigned or assignments given.

Spelling/Grammar:  We will be working through some grammar skills.  We will be completing assignments both on classroom and some worksheets. Any missing work will be noted on Educate.
We have a spelling test this week on the words we choose last week. It is a tough list, so make sure to look over it before Thursday.
Writing:  We will have our author's celebration this week.  We will continue to some writing through the end of the year.  Students will be able to choose to write poetry, another fiction story or a memoir.
Their fantasy stories will be graded and then sent home, but that will take some time.

Social Studies:  We are studying the US Constitution and Bill of Rights in these next 2 chapters.  We are currently taking some class notes.  We will complete a picture/metaphor activity this week. We will be ready to complete the study guide hopefully by the end of this week with the test next week Tuesday.  I will let you know for sure.

6th Grade Literature: We are currently in the middle of our mythology unit.  We  have read 3 myths from our book and will be finishing up the comparison story charts Monday of this week on Classroom. Look for those grades on Educate. Tuesday/Wednesday we will watch Disney's version of Hercules.  Students are assigned to pre-read the original story from Mythology before watching the movie version.
There will be test over the mythology unit next week.
Thursday and Friday we will begin our final book club.  Again, students are allowed to choose a story from the fantasy, mythology, mystery genre even if there is only other person reading it.  We will be working this week to make sure all students are in appropriate book club groups.
Students will have 21/2 weeks to read the book and there will be some questions and journaling to go with them. We have advised students to choose a book they can read in 21/2 weeks.

Blessings on the week ahead,
Mrs. Brown
