5th Grade Literacy:  Literature and Language Arts
5th grade literature will be a combination of reading selections from young adult novels and independent reading working through reading levels.
We will focus on vocabulary, theme, story parts, and comprehension.
We will use journaling, group discussion, and final evaluations.
Work will be done with paper/pencil in the Reader’s notebook, some of it will be done with Chromebooks.

50 Read Challenge: I am so excited to begin this program this year.  In conjunction with some reading research I did last summer, I am going to challenge the students to read 50 books between 5th and 6th grade.  We will be keeping track.  We will begin each class time with a chance for students to read whatever they like.  There will be weekly assignments and the reading log to help me keep track and gage what they are reading.  They will also be able to count any books we read in class.  There will be a reward for reaching the goal, however I hope to instill a love and habit of reading for the students that will carry them beyond 6th grade.
Because of this challenge, we will only complete 1 book report all year.  Less reports=more books to read!!
