Week of March 27-31

Welcome Back!!  I hope everyone had a relaxing break.  We will now gear up for fourth quarter.
This quarter goes very quickly, so make sure to check Educate weekly and not fall behind on 4th quarter assignments.

Here are some important upcoming dates:

Wednesday, April 5th:  Brown homeroom chapel
Thursday/Friday:  April 6-7th, 9:30-10:30:  6th Grade Holocaust Presentations
Tuesday, April 11th, 1:45-3:00 pm:  5th Grade Genius hour presentations
TBD:  6th Grade Holocaust field trip
May 17-19:  5th Grade Field trip days

More information will be coming for these dates and any possible changes.
For now - we are back to a regular schedule!

5th Grade Language Arts:  Spelling:  We will begin the week with a pretest.  Pages 154-158 will be due on Thursday.  We will be adding an extra page each week to prepare for Achievement tests.  Final test will be on Thursday.
Grammar:  We will continue to work through the weekly grammar pages, skipping some to allow for more writing.  We will continue to take the weekly quiz on Friday, but will opt to work on writing and revising rather than the proofreading page each week.

Literature: Now that we have finish reading Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, we will do a short unit on fairy tales.  We will read a story from the Treasures book this week and then move on to read and compare other fairy tales.  Keep watch on Google classroom for all the assignments that will go with this unit.

**Because we will be reading short stories in class, each student must have a novel they are reading on their own.  We talked about it before break.  I will be checking this week that each student has a book to read.

5th Grade social studies:  The debate was amazing.  The students did a wonderful job, portraying their side of the debate.  They were able to recall and use a lot of information that we had read and discussed in class.  They learned a great deal from the experience.  We will not take a test on the chapter.  I will grade their debate work instead.
We are moving on to the Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary War and Constitution.  This week we will be watching some Liberty Kids videos and discussing these events.  There will be some video notes and questions, so if your child is not at school, they will have to watch the videos on line to complete the work!

At some point we will take a test on the Declaration chapter.  I will let you know when that will be.

6th Grade Literature:  We are finishing up our unit on the Holocaust.  This week we will be working on a project based research project in groups.  We plan to finish and present these projects the first week of April.  While researching we will be watching the documentary called "Paper Clips."  It is a wonderful documentary about the Holocaust and a small school in Tennessee.  There will be some guided question assignments that go along on Google classroom.
**During this unit, each student will need a book of their own to read.  I will be checking this week to see what each is reading.

I will spend a couple days this week touching base for the two days I missed before break.  ALso, I will be checking any missing work from that week.  If y our student was absent or left early for break, they will need to check on work that was missed.

Have a blessed week in the Lord,
Mrs. Brown

The week before break and beginning of Quarter 4

We are still wrapping up units from third quarter, but all work from this week will be part of fourth quarter grades.

This will be a busy and exciting week in many classes.  Check out upcoming events that will be posted in coming weeks.

5th Grade Language Arts:  Spelling:  We will have spelling as normal this week.  The pretest and pages will be Monday, with pages due and final test on Thursday.  Again, it will begin 4th quarter grades.
We will have regular grammar pages this week as well, however we will look to do more creative writing beginning after break.  Proofreading page 150 will be assigned on Thursday and the weekly assessment will be done Friday in class.  I prefer students not work on these ahead of time, because I often change the directions.

Literature:  We will wrap up Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this week.  We will work on vocabulary.  It is done in class.  Students will be graded on their vocab folders and the work in class.  We will take a final test on the book but not vocabulary.  And at the end of the week we will watch the movie.  It is very well done, and follows the book closely, but it is not rated G.  Please email me if you prefer your child not view this movie at school.

Social Studies:  Our big debate is Tuesday!  Again, 5Brown will debate from 8:30-9:30 Tuesday morning.  5Akerson will debate from 12:45-1:45 Tuesday afternoon.  WE have worked diligently for over a week to prepare for the debate.  Please join us if you can!

6th Grade Literature:  We will continue with our Literature unit on the Holocaust.  This week we will complete vocabulary, and take a final book test.  We will begin our research Project based learning activity.  There is not a Number the Stars movie, but there is a movie that has a very similar story.  We will watch that at the end of the week.
All missing work was due on Friday.  Several students did finish the quarter with missing assignments.  We looked at Educate multiple times in order for students to take responsibility for what was missing.

I will be leaving Thursday morning with my daughter for a mission trip to Belize with Concordia.  Mrs. Albers will be subbing for me.  We will watch our literature movies those days, and she will be prepared for all activities.

Have a blessed week.  And I pray each of your families has a blessed Spring break week!  I hope you can rest and revive before we begin 4th quarter.  I will be unreachable in Belize beginning Thursday.

Third Quarter final week

We have arrived at the last week of the third quarter.
We will spend time this week reviewing Educate and any missing work.
**All missing work must be in by Friday, March 10th.
I have not been able to grade all the late and missing work that has been turned in recently.  I will grade it before report cards. Your child can check that I have it, but I will grade it at the end of the quarter.

5th Grade Language Arts:
Spelling:  Pages 142-145 are due Thursday.  We will take the pretest on Monday and the final test will be Thursday.  Last week was a tough week and many students struggled.  After taking the pretest, help your student find time to look over the words they missed.
Grammar:  We continue with adjectives.  We will work on the skill pages together on Tuesday.  We have been adjusting the assignments based on the skill and students' prior knowledge.  We will work on proofreading page 143 on Thursday and the final third quarter quiz on Friday.

Literature:  We are on the last 3 chapters of Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe.  It has been a great book to read together.  We have moved through it quickly. We will finish it by Wednesday of this week.  There will be one more set of quiz questions and one more journal.  We will finish up vocabulary the week before break and it will be counted as a fourth quarter grade. Each student is developing their own personal vocabulary list, so they will be graded on their folder and not a test grade.
We will plan on watching the movie before break as well.  I will send out an email about the movie.  You may certainly choose for your child to not view the film at school.

5th Grade social studies:
On Tuesday students will receive the chapter 10 test back.  We will look at where their social studies grade stands after that test.  Test corrections will be allowed, but will have to be made by Friday, 3/10.

We have begun Chapter 11 which is set up as a debate.  We have broken into groups and been assigned a historical figure to portray.  Half of the figures are Loyalists and the others are Patriots.  After a week of preparation the two sides will go against each other in a debate.  This activity allows each student to have a part, and dress in costume.  Some time this week, your student will let you know what they need to wear.
Please plan to attend this special event.  The Brown class debate will be Tuesday, March 14 from 8:30-9:30am.  The Akerson class debate will be Wednesday, March 15 at that same time.

6th Grade Literature:
We are at the halfway point in our reading of Number the Stars.  We will finish the book before spring break, but will continue to work on this unit.  The final test and vocabulary parts of the book will be on fourth quarters grade.  We will begin a research project that goes with this unit, and watch a wonderful documentary called "Paper Clips" as well as a movie that parallels the book well.

**Book reports were turned in last week.  We spent several days presenting them in groups.  Students were able to discuss and ask questions about a variety of books.  Hopefully some of the books they heard about will be books they decide to read.

Blessings on your week!
Mrs. Brown
